Searching “Innovate UK funding for AI” turns up a confusing mix of open, closed and paused schemes. Here’s a clear 2026 map of how Innovate UK actually funds AI projects, cited to UKRI. (dgm implements osFoundry as an independent partner; we are not a grant-writing service.)
What Innovate UK funds
Innovate UK is the UK’s national innovation agency, part of UKRI. It funds novel, commercially viable R&D through competitive funding competitions. Most competitions are sector-agnostic, so AI and software R&D can qualify — provided the work is genuinely new and has a credible route to market.
The key mental model: Innovate UK funds the development of something novel, not the adoption of an existing tool. If you want to deploy a commercial AI product, that’s not what these competitions are for.
There’s no single “Innovate UK application”
A common misconception is that there’s one application. In reality, you apply to a specific open competition through the Innovation Funding Service. Each competition sets its own:
- scope (the problem or sector it targets);
- eligibility (company size, whether collaboration is required);
- funding rate (the percentage of costs covered); and
- deadlines.
So step one is always: find the competition that fits your project.
Smart Grants are paused — use these routes instead
The flagship sector-agnostic competition, Smart Grants, has been paused since January 2025 (UKRI guidance). While that’s the case, the live Innovate UK routes for AI work are:
- Other open competitions on the Innovation Funding Service (sector or challenge-specific).
- Knowledge Transfer Partnerships — embed AI/data capability with a university partner (~67% funded for most SMEs).
- BridgeAI — the £100m AI-adoption programme offering funding competitions, guidance and compute vouchers.
Free help to apply
Innovate UK Business Growth (formerly Innovate UK EDGE) provides free one-to-one advisory support to ambitious, innovation-focused SMEs — including help identifying the right competition and strengthening an application. It’s advice, not cash, but it’s genuinely useful.
Where osFoundry and dgm fit
Whether or not you pursue Innovate UK funding, a strong project needs a sound technical foundation. dgm scopes and builds AI projects on osFoundry — bring-your-own-key, usage pricing, and self-hosting in your own cloud for data control. A well-defined project with a clear technical approach is also what makes a competition application more credible.
dgm is an independent integration partner, not a grant-writing service, with zero integrations so far. For the application, use your team or a specialist. To scope a competition-ready AI project, book a consultation with dgm. General information; confirm current competitions on the Innovation Funding Service.
